Maxine's Garden

Pleasant Hope Baptist Church created a garden on April 18, 2010 as part of a congregation-wide Earth Day celebration.  Recognizing the need for nutrient-rich food and better health in our community, our pastor led our church in creating our own solution instead of depending on the charity of others.  We grow vegetables and herbs on 1500 square feet of our church's front yard; providing produce to our members and neighbors.

The garden is named after Maxine Nicholas, a dynamic woman who joined Pleasant Hope as a young adult in the 1950's.  As someone who grew up on a farm in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, she was instrumental in partnering with Pastor Brown to ensure that the garden flourished.  She was the "Mother" of the garden.  She died on November 1, 2018 and is now a patron saint for this important work.
